Intermediate: This pattern is for those knitters who are comfortable with basic lace knitting and are ready to learn some new skills. Skills/concepts include garter tab cast on, various lace patterns and a knit-on border.

Notes From the Designer:

Acalypha are copperleaf plants native to Fiji and neighboring South Pacific islands. This semicircular shawl features several leaf-themed stitch patterns. It begins with a garter tab at the top center, progresses from simple increases and stockinette stitch to various lace stitches, and finishes with a knit-on leaf border. Just five increase rows are spaced throughout the body so that you can enjoy the lace knitting without worrying about an ever-changing stitch count.

  • Click the Videos tab to watch a tutorial on how to knit the leaf border.
  • Gauge is not crucial to this project, but will affect yardage and size.
  • Pattern uses three colors but can be made with more or fewer if preferred.
  • Shawl begins with the Garter Tab Cast-on. Instructions for this method are in Special Stitches on page 4.
  • Blocking is crucial to showcase the lace patterns. Do not be afraid to stretch firmly.

Love the colors/stripe of this shawl. I made it in a cotton cat. 3 light yarn, self striping. My increase transition wasn't as smooth as Chandi's, but I still love it. Thank you EFA!

I challenged myself with this lace pattern. I have never knitted lace before, it was too difficult, i though. Your patter was easy to follow. Certainly i had to frog a couple of times in the begging, may be that was the practice I needed. But the end result was totally worth it. I was so happy with it. I used a similar acrylic yarn, as I did not want to waist the money on more expensive stuff without knowing how that ends. Now I have purchased the very same yarn the patter calls for and can’t wait to make another shawl. The yarn is so soft and delicate, I can only imagine who much nicer it will look. Thank you for sharing this free pattern with us.

I am looking forward to doing this beautiful design. I have read through the pattern and it will be my next project. I can only say that it would be a real plus to have a chart for this pattern along with the written instructions. It would make it so much easier and provide a visual idea of what we should do. Otherwise this is a very attractive design that will keep my interest as I knit.

I stopped knitting last year after a minor stroke but I saw this pattern and had to make it! It looks complicated but it's quite easy in fact, even for me. I would just like to say 'thank you ' to Chandi of Expression Fibre Arts and great designer Janica York Carter for such a lovely pattern. I'm really enjoying knitting for the first time in ages!

This shawl was so much fun to knit! The pattern was easy to follow. I chose a maroon yarn that I bought locally. I can't wait for cooler weather to start wearing it. People I have shown it to all comment that they think. it looks like I bought it, instead of making it. I wanted to do a pattern where I started with the long edge and decreased stitches to the end, instead of increase the stitches like most shawl patterns. I will make this again! Thank you for the beautiful pattern!
