Need a quick and easy hat for your fella?
Have no fear.
Here's why this hat pattern is so awesome.
1. It's easyyyyy to make and the pattern is a breeze to memorize.
2. It's a basic hat so even the pickiest of guys will want to wear it.
3. It's fast. Took me 5 hours to knit so you could whip this out last minute if you needed to.
4. It's fun to change up! Do stripes if you like or make a bunch of them in every color.
5. It's unisex... yep. Gals can wear it too, of course, so make one for all the gals you love.
6. It's stretchy so fit isn't crucial as it'll fit virtually all adult heads. Yay.
7. It has a brim. So again, you don't have to stress about it being the perfect height. It can always be rolled up to suit the wearer.
8. You'll be sure to get lots of responses like: "You MADE this? Wow! It looks so professional and store-bought!" Thank you. We knitters choose to take that as a compliment.
YARN: One skein of 100 g or 115 g (3.5 - 4 oz) DK or Worsted Weight yarn. I used one skein of my Dewy DK yarn in colorway GRAY PEARL. If it's not there when you click over, it's sold out. My shades sell fast and we list new ones frequently, so just choose any color you like from the DK or Worsted Weight categories.
This particular Dewy Dk yarn is a versatile blend of superwash merino wool (so the hat will be machine-washable), a HINT of silk (for a touch of dewiness, but not enough to make it ultra shimmery), and nylon for strength and longevity. Yeeyah. Again, one skein is all you need for this hat.
Make sure the yarn you choose has some STRETCH. Preferably wool or yak or even alpaca would work. It's okay if it has some silk mixed in too, like our Pearlescent Merino Silk Worsted yarns... Those would in fact look FABULOUS.
Pure silk might not be the best as it doesn't have any stretch.
NEEDLES: US size 9 (5.5mm) circulars if you prefer magic loop. Or dpns will of course work too. (Double pointed needles)
STORY BEHIND THE PATTERN: Funny thing. I called it the "Boyfriend Beanie" because they both start with b's. But that delish fellow in the photos is my husband. And... he was just modeling the hat. I actually made it for my dad. He never requests anything but wanted a basic ribbed, brimmed hat to keep his head and ears warm while he checks on his cows over on the farm so I whipped out my needles and voila. This hat was born. We snapped the pictures and then bundled up the hat and sent it off on its way to my pa.
So there you have it! If you love it, please pin it, tweet it, facebook it, instagram it, ya know. If you want. ;)

it is nice knit
great pattern, easy to follow. Very stretchy even on 4.5 mm needles
I like the look of the pattern and can't wait to try it when I finish up current project on needles.
This pattern is so easy to memorize, it’s stretchy, and looks great in DK or worsted weight. I made one for me and one for my boyfriend.
Thank you for this pattern! It is easy and fun and the result is a very nice beanie.
Very easy and quick.
Great pattern. So quick and easy to make. A pleasure to have a pattern that is well written with no mistakes. I love it!
I enjoyed knitting this beanie and my man enjoys wearing it! Lovely designed and easy to follow the pattern.
I started knitting this and had to tear it out and start over. I can knit, but I don't know a lot about adjusting for differences in the yarn. When I knitted, it seemed that the holes were just too big, and the overall sizr of the hat was too large. However, the pattern is really easy to memorize and knit, so I feel like the errors must be mine.
I don't know if I am using the wrong weight thread, or if the needle are too large (or a combination) but it seemed as if the stitches were too big to be meaningful and the hat was a bit too large. I ended up taking it apart and plan on starting over. It is very easy to read and very easy to memorize. I can't wait to actually get on it and do it right! I feel like any errors are my own.
I love the simplicity of the pattern, but the needle gauge is completely wrong! I used a 5, cut the stitches down to 90, and it is still too big! I got a lot of practice making this beanie, but I also wasted a lot of time not knowing the correct needle gauge.
Excellent pattern...especially as a 'carry around' as I knit where-ever-I-go!! I did have to pay attention at the decreasing but that is because I wanted to do it correctly! AND, it came out perfect. Thank you for the nice pattern...I made a project page on Ravelry and included pix of my finished hat--which will be gifted/donated/sent north where it will be appreciated!
This pattern is wonderful!! I have made loads of hats for myself but this one was for my husband and he was really pleased. It's now his cold weather golf hat. The pattern itself is very easy and works up fairly quickly. I used a lovely Dewy DK in Cypress and used this pattern to teach myself continental style knitting. Beginners or advanced knitters will love this pattern.
Neat pattern; Easy to follow and looks great.
This is a great hat and very easy to pull together. I had some issues with the pattern, however. It calls for DK yarn but also a #9 needle? That would have been gigantic and loose. I used a #6 and I think it was the perfect size (that is also the needle size listed on the back of the yarn). Also, the pattern doesn't say what size loop. I used a 16" and that was great. Another issue was that the pattern doesn't say that you will have to change over to DPNs, which you absolutely do. I didn't have DPNs in that size, so, I winged it with some smaller ones that I already owned. Easy pattern but just a bit vague.
Quick, easy pattern to knit. Pattern is well written. Looks good on.
I am a beginning knitter and really enjoyed making this beanie - in fact I made two. I had to do some ripping out when I made a mistake doing the decreases the first time, but the pattern is easy to follow and the hat fits very well. I plan to make it again as it is quick, fun and a satisfying project.
I made a beanie for my brother in dark blue, to go fishing. It was an easy and quick knit with very clear instructions. He LOVES it, and he 'ordered' another in light grey haha :)
This was a quick and easy knit and I gave it to my brother to wear while fishing, last night. He LOVED it - I've now got another order for one in grey (his one is dark blue) for when he needs to wash this one :)
Great pattern and easy to follow, I’ll be making many more of these.
A great pattern and easy to follow. I’m not a fan of dpn but I found it easy to adapt to rows. I’ll be making many more of these
Can't wait to begin making this, thank you so much Chandi :)
Can't wait to begin making this , thank you so much Chandi :)
Lovely pattern. Clear instructions, easy knit and looks fabulous.
Loved this pattern. Well written, clear instructions and the finished beanie is fabulous.
Lovely easy pattern well written.
I absolutely loved knitting this pattern. The final result was fab! Gave it away for a chemo hat. Perfect!
This is the first pattern I’ve ever used and I’m loving it. It is turning out beautifully!
Super simple pattern! It was a joy to knit. I really liked that I could put it down and pick it up without having to pull out my pattern every time. As a busy mom, that is huge.
I finished my second beanie tonight. It is so easy to knit but that's not why I knit two of them. The fit is just perfect on my man's head. He will get plenty of wear from this beanie. Thank you so much. I will shop again.
This beanie is just perfect !
I've knitted a lot of hats over the years - many with beautiful color patterns or cabling. This hat is my new favorite. My husband requested it after searching online for a hat style he would like. It's a clean design that is incredibly stretchy, making it the most comfortable hat I've made yet. It holds up well on windy days too - we noticed no draftiness!
I love the simplicity of this pattern. I'm almost finished with this in a soft, earth tone yarn. It's part of a hat-shawl duo.
I love the pattern. I have done several ribbed beanies but none that look like this in the decreases. I'm making it for my son for Christmas. It's a great pattern.
Very nice pattern! I love it. Thank you so much :-)
Very nice pattern! I love it. Thank you so much :-)
Best beanie pattern ever :) Simple and well written pattern and the teen loves it. I did use a 4.5mm needle and find it is plenty big enough. Thank you for this pattern.
Was extremely easy to make. Husband loves it.
A fun project! Hubby loves his new beanie and ordered more of them. And yes, it's true, all of his working mates asked, where he bought this hat! Plus: The pattern is perfect for all those men with a lil' bigger head circumference.
Love it! Fast and easy.
So quick and easy. Needed a last minute gift and this was perfect
I actually just finished 2 of these for family who will be visiting our cold weather for the holidays. It was super easy and depending upon the yarn, dictated using size 9 or 8 needles. This is one of those patterns where you can simultaneously knit and be social too!
I just finished this hat today. I don’t have very strong knitting skills and was very happy that this was easy for me to follow and I love the way the hat came out.
I loved this pattern was easy to follow and helped my practice my K2tog
This is an awesome pattern that was easy to follow and fun to knit. As a beginning knitter, I appreciate the simplicity of the pattern. But the end result looks fabulous, not like a beginner project! This is my go-to touque pattern.
Great little project! My husband wanted a simple hat for the winter and this was perfect to throw together. Great for beginners.
easy pattern to follow easy to adapt and looks great. knits up super fast and very comfortable to wear. will be knitting more of these in the futer
This pattern was very easy to follow. A very quick and easy pattern to knit. Love it!!
Super easy and super fast. Turned out great, so I decided to make one for me, almost finished. Went down a needle size as the first one was a bit big for me.
I just started knitting and this pattern was awesome and so easy to follow! EFA is where I go for all my knitting needs!
The pattern is so easy to follow because some patterns are hard for me to follow. I'm still working on the hat but I'm almost done with it. I hope to find more beginner patterns for me to learn how to read
Very stretchy! Should have used a smaller needle as my gauge was a bit too big. Super fun and quick to whip up~
A good solid go to pattern. Thank you for this pattern!
I love this pattern its easy-what I love is the heart chakra yarn.
I love this hat and this pattern. It is so stretchy and easy to knit up. It looks good with a variety of yarns... both my husband and my son were happy with the fit and style.
This pattern was very easy to follow and turned into a perfect hat.
The boyfriend hat pattern is quick, easy and good looking, especially with the alpaca silk DK yarn! Much easier than a sweater.
I just finished knitting this hat for my husband. I loved this pattern as it was long enough for a brim and due to the ribbing I didn't have to worry about it fitting! I used DK yarn and made a striped version.
Very easy to follow pattern with clear instructions on how to knit the hat. Looks great once finished. The only thing I would change is to SSK some of the decreases when combining a knit and a purl stitch instead of the written K2Tog.
Easy, love it! Thank you for sharing it... I was on the hunt for just this pattern when there it was!!!! And your model is adorable too :)
This is a perfect hat pattern. It is well written, easy to make and looks wonderful. The timing was great since I was looking for a quick, easy, last minute gift. I almost have it finished and it will make a great stocking stuffer. Your yarn for this hat is amazing. Thanks Chandi.
Easy to knit, very well explained.
I loved knitting this beanie so much I had knitted up two! I referred to your video to get the hang of it as I am a beginner. It's easy and simply enough that I had brought it with me to knit on a 6 hour flight! Thank you so much!
Great fun making this hat, quick and easy to do.
Super easy to knit, though I changed the pattern ever so slightly so that I could knit it on 2 needles rather on the loop. I made it in a week - basically whilst watching the tv in the evenings. It is lovely and warm and I have received many compliments. Many thanks.
Just love the decreasing on the top. Quick and easy. Almost finished one for my son.
I love love love this pattern! It is so quick, and is also easy to modify to fit specific needs. This is a very intuitive knit and is easily memorized. This beanie makes for a wonderful gift! Orrrr it's awesome to keep too :).
Easy, classic and stylish beanie. Well done! expression fiber arts. Thank you for sharing the pattern.
nice company - expression fiber arts. merino wool DK works well, knits up nicely,
Whenever I knit a hat, it was either too short or too tight or too loose. Until now! The hat is so wonderfully stretchy that it fits literally everybody and by folding up the rim the length can be adjusted. And it really is a fast knit - from Thursday night to Saturday afternoon, I knit two of them and the third one is in the making. Thank you so much for the great pattern! Greetings from Germany, Katrin
The pattern is a simple, quick to knit hat that is stylish for either men or women. Not everything has to be complicated.
I' m fairly new to knitting and this hat was so easy to follow the-pattern I used a skein of yak yarn . I love your yarn and patterns
This was my first real knitting project. The pattern is way to follow and perfect for a beginner. I made this for my husband and he loves it!
Easy to knit. Really liked how the decreases came together.
so quick to knit up
The pattern works well. It knit up quickly and easily with zero problems. My husband really likes it!
Well written and easy to follow pattern . Quick and easy . Just perfect
I've been crocheting for a long time but this is my first year in knitting and though I've made a scarf, I wanted to challenge myself in a more complex project. Here in Japan beanies are all the rage now and whenever I see one in a store I puff up and thought to myself "I can make one for myself" but never found a pattern I liked, until I came across this Boyfriend Beanie. It took 5 hours for Chandi, but 15 days for me LOL. But oh, if only I could upload a picture here! Thank you for this wonderful pattern!
This knitted up very quickly but I did one with size 6mm needls and another with 6.50mm in the same yarn
Well written pattern, a fun , easy knit.
I'm not very good at written directions, however, Chandi makes them easy to understand and to follow. Love the pattern and definitely good for anyone!
I am a beginner and tried this and it was easy.
Thank you for the free pattern. I copied it exactly. I used double knit 100% pure wool. It turned out perfectly. Not too tight , knitted it for my grown up son.
I just completed this beanie for my hubby and he loves it. It was such a rewarding project that I plan on starting another one today.
Hi, I found the instructions easy to follow, as a first time user of the magic loop method. I've made two beanies now just using wool from my stash, now I just need a good looking model to wear them!
