US size 4 (3.5 mm) 40" (102 cm) circular needles

SKILL LEVEL:

Intermediate- This pattern is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include: basic lace stitches.

Notes From the Designer:

Camarodonta is a scientific order of sea urchin. This circular shawl swirls with lace designs reminiscent of both ocean movement and the intricate patterning of sea urchin fossils. Based on Elizabeth Zimmerman’s marvelous pi shawl concept,  just six increase rounds (most at the beginning) let you enjoy lace knitting without the worry of an ever-changing stitch count.

I credit Bonnie Sennott for her brilliant solution to working the starlight lace pattern stitch in the round (Section 2) by moving the beginning of round stitch marker on two rows to make the repeats shift properly. Thanks also to Mwaa Knit for the adaptation of a stitch pattern (Section 3) from The Haapsalu Shawl by Siiri Riemann.

  • Gauge is not crucial to this project, but will affect yardage and size.

  • Blocking is crucial to showcase the lace patterns. Do not be afraid to stretch firmly.

  • Pattern comes with written and charted instructions.

I think this pi shawl is marvelous, very beautiful! It looks a little difficult to me, because I never knit a pattern like this in a round, but I love the way it looks and I like very much the way you explain the pattern and the clarity of your demo. It's a pleasure to learn from you. Thank you very much Chandi and thank you very much to alll= your team!

I’m waiting for the right colors of yarn. I keep looking at the yarn used in the pattern but I wish the browns in the January skies skein where softer and the other colors popped more! I’ll keep watching for the right color which will happen! Your yarn is beautiful!
