Notes From the Designer:

Inspired by the beautifully complex butterfly life cycle, don’t let this shawl fool you! Using five stitches only – knit, purl, yo, k3tog, and sk2p – you can create this with minimal effort. As you knit, you'll be captivated by the way the simple stitches combine to form a unique, intricate pattern, and with a purl row every other row, Chrysalis is a breeze to knit. Like the chrysalis itself, this shawl symbolizes growth and change and is a beautiful reflection of your own knitting journey.

  • Click the Videos tab to watch a video showing how to knit the first few rows, which include all the stitches you’ll need to know to make this shawl.
  • The sample shown used approximately 1,289 yds/1,179 m total: Color A: 262 yds/239.5 m, Color B: 288 yds/263.5 m, Color C: 298.5 yds/273 m, and Color D: 273 yds/250 m.
  • This shawl is worked from end to end with RS rows having lace stitches and WS rows purl stitches.
  • Follow chart or written instructions according to your preference.
  • This rectangular shawl uses 25 repeats of the main section (Rows 7 - 30). For a longer shawl, work more repeats of the main chart section. For a wider shawl, cast on additional multiples of 18 stitches. Each repeat measures 2.7” (7 cm) in width after blocking.
  • The border of this shawl is knitted in Garter Stitch (knit all stitches) for an easy, versatile edge.
  • For a neater edge, slip the first stitch as if to purl.
