Etude no 5

$6.00

SIZE: Approximately 14.5” height x 82.5” width, blocked.

MATERIALS:

Expression Fiber Arts Twisted Tweed Sport

Shown in color: Fisherman

3 skeins

If that color isn't available, any from this category will work. We used a total of 780 yards for the sample shown.

NEEDLES: US size 5 (3.75 mm) circulars or straights (or size needed to make gauge)

Adventurous Beginner-  This pattern is suited to the adventurous knitter wishing to learning new techniques.

Notes From the Designer:

•A gorgeeeeous shawl that is easier than it looks! The 5th in our series of Etude patterns, this beauty can be dressed up or down and is sure to become a wardrobe staple!

•A simple garter stitch pattern is glamorized with the addition of a knitted-on cabled border. The cable pattern is quickly memorized and is easy enough for new cable knitters, while also entertaining experienced knitters.

•Knit sideways from end to end, this is a great travel project that doesn’t require a long needle to work hundreds of stitches on the final rows.

•All shaping is worked within the garter stitch body to keep the cable pattern intact.

•While working on this pattern, I listened to a vinyl recording of Disney’s “Fantasia,” which I bought years ago at a secondhand shop. I loved watching and rewatching the video when I was a kid, and I still enjoy most of the musical selections from it. I listen to that old vinyl a lot when knitting, or just sampling new ideas. For a fun pattern like this, try listening to “Dance of the Hours,” by Amilcare Ponchielli. Like with the Pastoral Symphony, I can vividly picture the cartoon that accompanied this piece in the film every time I hear it, and I still think fondly of the dancing hippos, which were my favorite part as a child.

This pattern is awesome! It looks elegant in any yarn, and looks like it is much more difficult than it is. I can see me making many of these for gifts.

I have learned some new techniques while making this shawl. The instructions are clear and Chandi’s video is very helpful. It took me a few tries to get that first cable down (this is only my second time doing cables) but now it’s super easy. Techniques learned: twisted rib, ptbl, and a refresher on cables. I’m excited to finish the shawl. Thank you to Expression Fiber Arts for such a wonderful website.

I'm still working on understanding the cable stitch. I'm practicing on some yarn remnants before I use the Pearlescent Worsted yarn I purchased.

The first time I saw this shawl I say to myself that I must knit it. I like very much the pattern. I like the border cable. I like the yarn and I like the way it looks on the shoulders. It looks gorgeous! Thank you very much for such a beautiful pattern and all that you do for us the one who like to knit in the midst of the daily problems to have a little time of relaxation and happiness.

First of all thank you for releasing this pattern for free. I found the instructions easy to follow,it's not too fussy but is still making an impact. I am using a substitute yarn,so I hope it flows as lovely as Chandi's did. Thanks again

I ordered the pattern and when I went to order the fisherman yarn I was very disappointed that they could not fill a 3 skein order! I had been hoping to knit this shawl to go with the other items in my wardrobe and was very disappointed that the yarn shown was not available.

Love this pattern. As every of them from EFA, it's lovely edited and easy to follow, and the final item is stunning: simple, fun, and very wearable. I'm so grateful you continue sharing with us all these reasons to keep knitting. Thank you, team! :)

I'm still a beginner, and when one pattern proved too much for me at this time, I tried this one, using the gorgeous pearlescent "Raven" (ltd ed color). I struggled with the cabling a little bit, but once I found a cable needle that worked well for me, it has become more effortless. Chandi's videos are a goldmine in learning techniques! My scarf may not be perfect, because my knitting is still not terribly good, but this pattern + this yarn make it look amazing, and I will have friends raving about how I need to make and sell them one! (Not gonna happen, but it's fun when you're proud of something) Thanks, Chandi!
