Geode

$5.00

SIZE: Varies with needle size, stitch gauge and rows that you choose to knit. Sample shown measures approximately 36" in diameter and 12" high

MATERIALS:

Expression Fiber Arts Pearlescent Fingering

Shown in colorway: June Alexandrite.  1 skein (4oz, 550 yd each)

2.5 oz/343 yd were used for the sample shown.

If this color isn’t available, any yarn from this category will work. Other yarn weights will work as well.

Note: To follow the “recipe” to achieve color pooling, you will want to choose a yarn that has long bands of color. (Random speckled shades and solids won't work.)

NEEDLES:

US 5 (3.75 mm) 24" circular needles

Intermediate -  This pattern is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include: Color pooling, following a knitting "recipe."

Notes From the Designer:

•A color-pooling cowl! Use any yarn weight and opt for a colorway with long bands of color.

•As a child, my daughter was always fascinated by geodes. And why not? How something so entirely ordinary looking could contain such a colorful, glittery interior was borderline magical! People can be like geodes. Perhaps unassuming on the outside, but once you get them to open up, they may surprise you with a truly lovely, sparkly soul.

•The idea of geodes is what influenced the design of this cowl. Based on a simple 4x4 rib, the stitch pattern changes to seed stitch as the color changes. Using this lovely pearlescent yarn, the seed stitch creates both texture and shine.

•The directions for this cowl are more of an explanation of method (or a recipe), rather than specific stitch and row numbers. Once the method is understood, you may adapt it to create a smaller or larger cowl or scarf.

•Click the Videos tab for a demonstration of how to get started making this pattern!

Well-written with lots of tips

This is described as a recipe rather than a pattern, but there are plenty of tips, photos, and a video. Love the results! Will definitely do again! I also think what you learn with this pattern will help with other assigned pooling projects.

The color-pooling cowl, I made it in shades of green with rust brick colours and will be part of my business attire this autumn-winter Thank you for this wonderful, satisfying gift!

Interesting pattern! Kept me entertained and curious throughout the pattern due to its unpredictable and wild nature.

Geode Cowl
5 Stars

I am so happy to write a review for Expression Fiber Arts! I have made many beautiful knitted items from EFA, including cowls, sweaters, a blanket, shawls, scarves, and hats. Every single one of them has turned out beautifully! EFA‘s yarn is such a pleasure to work with. I have not made the Geode Cowl yet, but I did make the Diamond Cowl and it was so beautiful, I made two of them! So long story short, there is nothing I have ever purchased from EFA that has not been of the highest quality, wonderful designers, helpful pattern instructions and videos, beautiful yarn, all questions answered via email … just plain a pleasure to work with!

The technique required to knit this wonderful pattern is explained very clearly and supplemented by numerous illustrations. In addition, the available video helps to find the report. Once the "recipe" has been understood and your own stitch count has been found, this scarf can be easily knitted and is absolutely suitable for beginners: only knit and purl stitches are worked in 4x4 rib or seed stitch depending on the current color of the strand. Since the pattern repeat consists of only 8 stitches, the work can be interrupted and resumed at any time easily. That makes it ideal for me as a pattern to work on the go, for example while waiting on the bus station, during a short break or even while watching TV. What I also really like about this pattern is that I don't have to worry about running out of yarn because I can cast off the work at any time. Individual adjustment of the length is also easily possible. I worked this pattern with Oasis Camel Silk Fingering in the color "June Alexandrite". And it has become an absolute eye-catcher!

I love this pattern and I especially love the yarn colors and quality of this yarn, put together by Chandi! She is so sweet and I love her inspirational notes on her page! My only problem is not being able to knit fast enough! I want to make all of these patterns! I am so happy to find this site!

Mystery solved

I always wondered how the planned pooling was done on a knitted garment. This pattern/recipe explains it well and includes all the necessary diagrams to go with it. I like that I can try this out on a small cowl before getting into something large like a shawl. One caveat is that you must choose the right type of variegated colorway for this to work, and Chandi has lovely colorways that will work (and some that don't, so read the instructions).

I like this cowl, I like the colors and the pattern. I didn't make any cowl yet so I think it will be the first that I will knit. I like also the idea of a knitting "recipe" so I will enjoy very much to knit this beautiful cowl. Thank you very much!

Lovely, but a little different than expected

The yarn is lovely and very soft! It's got much more of a pronounced thick/thin structure than is reflected in the photos, so just be aware. The skein I received varies from about worsted at the thick parts to fingering at the thin parts.

I made three Geode cowls using the June Alexandrite for Christmas presents. I'm making another one for myself now. And I already have two more skeins to make cowls for a couple (very good) friends. The pattern is easy and a pleasure to work. The cowl is an elegant design. The June Alexandrite Pearlescent Fingerling yarn is so beautiful and a joy to touch.

GORGEOUS!!
