US size 7 (4.5 mm) double pointed needles or size needed to obtain gauge

SKILL LEVEL:

Adventurous Beginner: For those knitters who are ready to create a simple garment. Skills include knitting in the round, 1 x 1 ribbing, and garter stitch stripes that require changing colors and carrying unused yarn up the side.

Notes from the Designer:

Gofleidio is a Welsh word for cuddles. This quick-to-stitch shrug hugs your shoulders and wraps your arms in snuggly softness. Worked from side to side, you start by working a ribbed cuff in the round, increasing stitches as you progress up the sleeve. Then you switch to working flat in rows, adding some textured stripes as you change colors. Once you reach the center back, you do it all again in reverse! This shrug is offered in three sizes (XS–M, L–2XL, 3XL–5XL) so that you can choose a wingspan that fits best.
  • Click the Videos tab to learn how to knit this shrug.
  • Pattern is worked from cuff to cuff with no seaming required.
  • To ensure that you have enough yarn to make the shrug, use color F to swatch.
  • See table on page 6 for total yardage for all sizes.
  • Carry unused colors loosely up the side.

Erratum-

When starting to work in rows pattern should say: Row 1 (RS): With MC, continue to k across sts on left needle until you have worked 108 sts, then turn your work and begin row 2. Pattern updated 1.29.22

Gofleido shrug
1 Star

This is a beautiful shrug; however I found the pattern to be very complicated for something that should be very easy. The first one I knitted to was too short (cuffs above my elbows ) because of the confusion in changing colors and going back and forth from changing colors (MC is a certain color; then MC is a different color). The “repeats” have “repeats” within them. My first one had to be ripped out; I started another one trying to be more focused on the changes, and I’ve still lost my place. I’ll probably just try to adapt the pattern to something I can understand.

Horrible fit!
1 Star

The instructions were excellent and easy to knit. However, after I was finished knitting this (which took hundreds if not thousands of hours to knit!) and tried it on, the sleeves were 3/4, not full sleeves and while the rest of it was long enough, it slipped off my shoulders and since there was no way to even use a shawl pin to hold it up, because of the design, I will now have to rip it all out! The model wearing this is posed in so many positions, which is nice to really be able to see how the garment is worn, but upon a closer look, you can see it barely stays on her shoulders and one photo it is off her shoulders entirely. It looks beautiful, but just sadly cannot be worn. I guess I will stick to knitting scarves and shawls that can be worn easier and where I can add a shawl pin if needed. It was a great idea, but sadly not in theory. Even if the sleeves came out longer, it would not have made a difference to the fit on my shoulders, since the front is so open as you can see and there is nothing keeping this on the shoulders.

I love the simplicity of this pattern. It makes it easy to modify it to be your own. I am using a variegated color progression in a mohair blend with larger needles with the smallest size pattern to make an oversized large shrug that should be cozy on these chilly days....

A very easy pattern, but has its special combination with colors, so even if you're not an expert, you can make a unique garment. Comfortable when it's not clear wheter it's cold or warm outside, and it doesn't fall off your shoulders!

Nice pattern and a very simple knit. I have a sweater with the same shape and wanted to knit one out of a different yarn and this one is perfect. Really easy to adjust size. I am making mine in one color, Penguin North DK, and I know it will be a go to sweater.

Simplicity at it's finest. Easy to follow pattern no matter your skill level. If adventurous enough you could modify the pattern to make it a little wider towards the center. I absolutely love it, as well as the crochet version.
