46 x 60” (117 x 152 cm)
The blanket will require 12 skeins total. Each month, we will release one clue and new, recommended colors for that clue.
If those colors aren't available, any from this category will work.
I have long admired quilters and their dedication to their craft. The many hours required to choose just the right fabrics, hand cut the various pieces, assemble them precisely, and then work the countless, little stitches to finish it all off truly amazes me. What a testament of love for what they do, as well as for the lucky recipient of their art.
The design of this blanket is loosely based on a well-known quilt pattern. By breaking it down into 12 manageable sections, you will be able to create your own treasure. Use the warm color palette chosen for this Mystery CAL to invoke visions of curling up hearthside in front of a crackling fire with loved ones.
- Click the Videos tab to watch a video of how to crochet the rows in Clue #5.
- The blanket begins with a center square motif, and then radiates outward. The final layout is similar to a Log Cabin quilt design with a bit of a twist.
- Throughout the pattern, the first stitch refers to the same one as the base of the starting chain, unless otherwise explicitly stated otherwise.
- It is extremely helpful to place a removable stitch marker on the right side of your work, so you can easily determine where to begin subsequent sections. You may also find it helpful to add a marker to denote the first stitch of each round for Section 1. It helps to indicate where the repeats stop, and it helps show the top of turning chains to work into them later.
- Making a gauge swatch is critical to achieve the desired results. I used to think that I “always worked to gauge.” However, it finally dawned on me that what I was really assuming was that I worked to the same gauge as the person who designed the pattern. Believe me, that is a bad assumption. Please DO NOT assume that you crochet to the same gauge as I do! I have learned that I tend to crochet on the "tight" end of the spectrum, so do not be surprised if you need to go down a hook size (or 2!). Yes, it is an extra step, but it also assures you that what you are crocheting will produce what you expect. And you won’t need to worry about running out of yarn.
- If you are substituting yarn, it is especially important to verify that it behaves in the same way as the yarn called for in the pattern. If you are using a substitute yarn, be sure that it is mostly natural fibers. You need to be able to block the blanket to get the straightest possible edges. Man-made fibers typically do not block well and will shrink back to the as-knit shape.
Erratum- Section 2 chart updated. Please download a new copy of the pattern. *Please note, if you are watching the video, follow the written directions for rows 16 and 17.

"Once upon a time there was a piece of wood. It was not an expensive piece of wood. Far from it. Just a common block of firewood, one of those thick, solid logs that are put on the fire in winter to make cold rooms cozy and warm.” -Carlo Collodi
Love love love love lovin' it, lovin' it! :-)
Love love love love lovin' it, lovin' it! :-)
So far I'm finishing up clue no. 5, and my blanket is coming out great! It's been fun to engage on ravelry and see the different styles following the same pattern! The pattern has charts and written instructions and links to the videos, so it's really easy to follow! Can't wait to finish it in December!
Everything I expected and then more.
I tried to make this, but it just did not work for me. I could not get the stitch count correct. Instead, I made the Hoover Dam Shawl and I love it! Now I am working on my second Lily! Thank you for such beautiful patterns.
This is my first blanket to crochet. It has been an adventure to learn how to read a pattern. I love the colors.
Interessante e stimolante per la creatività
Enjoying it but wished the parts would take about the same amount of time to spread out through month. May took only about 3 hours.
Up to Clue #4 and loving it!!! Can't wait to see what comes next... exciting!
I joined the MKAL and the MCAL and I think it is great fun. I do enjoy waiting for every cue and look forward to seeing the finished project. If I may I would just say one thing :is there any way you could work out a way to get the yarn to us maybe three at a time ? it would save on shipping of course but with the new delays in the postal service the orders take more time to get to us Otherwise thank you Chandi this Mystery Knit or Crochet Along is a great idea. regards
Difficult to review a MCAL when it’s only been released 1/3rd of the way but am enjoying the process & do like how it looks so far.
So far so good. The instruction I have gotten are easy to follow.
So Far So Good. The instructions each month are easy to follow.
I had no time to crochet the first two parts, but they are very good prepared. Thank you for sharing the pattern.
I’m looking forward to being able to start this project. I just absolutely love the patterns and yarns available. Chandi and team are always ready To help.
Enjoying the MCAL!
Once I get going and look at the video it's been great!! This is going to be beautiful.
Love the colors for my blanket.
Thanks. Very nice project.
I’m enjoying working on this cal….can’t afford the Expression Fiber Arts yarn so am using 3 different colours of Lion Brand Ferris Wheel in Wild Violets, Evergreen & Imaginary Garden.
Very nice project
Love the different patterns
Love the different patterns
This CAL has been fun to do and easy to understand. I love seeing the new color suggestions and putting them together.
I love the fact there’s written and live tutorial. I am using the luster worsted and very much like the feel, not rough, very smooth and pretty.
I have never done crochet before so felt a little apprehensive about starting with a blanket. With the videos this has been so easy to follow along and I am loving it!! So glad to have joined the fun
It is a beautiful pattern, I am looking forward to finish it
So far so good
I love it! I'm only through the first 2 clues, but have enjoyed every minute. The directions were very clear, and there are also the video tutorials if you are puzzled! I likely will be making a second one!
It was a great pattern, well written and a easy crochet.
I am having fun and learning with my first big crochet project. I am really glad there is one clue a month. Wish I had a clue as to color sequence or gradation. One color clue a month is challenging.
Loving this so far. Doing it twice in different yarn weights. You won’t be disappointed.
Just received my gorgeous yarn from Expression Fiber Arts, and I'm looking forward to beginning Clue#2 soon!
This is my first crochet project and I am learning a lot! I just finished clue one, havings crocheted the original square at least three times over. There are mistakes where I fudged to get to the right number of stitches, but they are not really very apparent IMHO. The pattern is very straightforward once you 'get it', the forum is incredibly helpful and the yarn is wonderful.
This is my first actual crochet project and I have been having a very hard time basically because I am learning how to crochet as I go along. I have just finished clue one having actually crocheted the whole thing at least three times. BUT the pattern is straightforward and easy to understand once you 'get it'. Even though there are mistakes where I fudged a bit, they are really not immediately apparent IMHO. The jury is out because I'm not sure that I really care for crocheted items - however, I have to give this a top rating because I am learning a lot, it is turning out well, I love the yarn, the forum is full of helpful people.
I’m having great fun making this afghan. I’ve purchased yarn from Chandi and it is downright delicious! I’ve finished the first clue and am awaiting the yarn I ordered from her for the second. This is a great crochet along!
I love it more with every month!!!
Two clues completed, with 10 remaining, this is looking to be a very attractive and fun project. I appreciate all the time and effort to produce such a lovely blanket with my only criticism being that instructions could be enormously improved with complete charts rather than the abbreviated form, which for me, do not help. Thank you for hosting this mystery CAL - I am enjoying it so much!
Enjoing every new addition to the blanket
This design is gorgeous! I can't wait for the next section to come out. I have a feeling this is going to be a gorgeous afghan when it's all completed.
As a novice crocheter, I joined this to improve my skills. The video tutorial is exactly the help I need and so far, it's going great
I'm doing both and in love with both . Best instructions ever . Can't wait for clue 2 heartside.
Basically, I don't know how to crochet. But by the time I finish this blanket, I bet I will know. Instructions are fairly easy to follow, even for a newbie like me. I am excited to see how this works out.
Everything about this was perfect!! Thank you Chandi
The stitches were inventive and the square turned out beautifully. Additionally i used the recommended EFA yarn and it could not have turned out more perfect! Thank you Chandi. I can't wait for month number 2!
This pattern has been so fun and interesting to work up. I love it!!
I've just begun this project. The pattern is clearly written and easy to follow. I viewed the tutorial and know if I hit a snag that I've got excellent backup!
This is a well-written pattern and I’m looking forward to using it as soon as the yarn I ordered gets here.
I loved creating the first month of this project. I can't wait to start on the rest of it. Love, love, love
Wonderfully written pattern. Was able to follow and wrap up clue one in a single afternoon. I look forward to the rest of the year!
Wonderful start for the CAL!! Can't wait to see where it goes...
I signed up to join in the Hearthside MCAL and ma loving the first part. I’ve finished it and am anxiously waiting for clue/part 2. The first part is easy enough for a beginner to try and comes with not only the written pattern but a chart as well to follow along. I found the starting motifs to have lots of variety to it so that even expert crochets will have lots of fun making this section.
I am enjoying the pattern. It is easy to read. I can't wait for part 2
Need to test different yarn I have at home first.
I am testing yarn I have at home.
Everything you do is wonderful. The yarns and knits are very beautiful. I follow you with pleasure and you inspire me every time.
Thanks so much for this and all the other patterns! I am intending to tackle the first element soon and what I can say so far is that the pattern chart will really be of tremendous help! Thanks again!
I am getting there. I am not so good at doing mandala type items, but I will get it after a few tries. Guess it is good practice.
Enjoyable pattern so far. Looking forward to seeing it grow over the coming months.
Lovely, a very easy start, love that it has a chart!
Lovely, a very easy start, love that it has a chart!
I can’t wait for #2 of the CAL.
Instructions look clear. I haven't started it yet
I have downloaded your pattern, to use my very large Expressionfibreart stash. However, the pattern is only is US terms, I am needing UK terns. Is it possible for you to rewrite the pattern for your worldwide subscribers? Thank you
I have downloaded your pattern, which I was very excited to start using my Expressionfibre art stash (which is very large!!). However, to my dismay the pattern is only written in US terms and I am needing UK terms. Is it possible for you to rewrite the pattern to include your worldwide subscribers?
Haven’t started yet But hope do it soon
As I’m currently recuperating from hip replacement surgery, I haven’t yet been able to go shopping for the yarn needed, I do plan on catching up when I can & am looking forward to doing so. In all fairness, I can only rate what I know having watched the 1st tutorial & am excited to start.
Love the idea that we dont know the final result
Love all the patterns this Cal is gonna be amazing on my couch
Can’t wait to start this project!!
So I am a avid crochetier and this pattern is great. Not to hard but a little challenging. I used colors that I have left over so, I don't have comparable colors from this site. Thank you for the read.
