HOOK:

US size H/8 (5.0 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

SKILL LEVEL:

Adventurous Beginner: For those crocheters who are ready to learn some new skills or stitch combinations.

I have long admired quilters and their dedication to their craft. The many hours required to choose just the right fabrics, hand cut the various pieces, assemble them precisely, and then work the countless, little stitches to finish it all off truly amazes me. What a testament of love for what they do, as well as for the lucky recipient of their art.

The design of this blanket is loosely based on a well-known quilt pattern. By breaking it down into 12 manageable sections, you will be able to create your own treasure. Use the warm color palette chosen for this Mystery CAL to invoke visions of curling up hearthside in front of a crackling fire with loved ones.

  • Click the Videos tab to watch a video about Clue #12.
  • The blanket begins with a center square motif, and then radiates outward. The final layout is similar to a Log Cabin quilt design with a bit of a twist.
  • Throughout the pattern, the first stitch refers to the same one as the base of the starting chain, unless otherwise explicitly stated otherwise.
  • It is extremely helpful to place a removable stitch marker on the right side of your work, so you can easily determine where to begin subsequent sections. You may also find it helpful to add a marker to denote the first stitch of each round for Section 1. It helps to indicate where the repeats stop, and it helps show the top of turning chains to work into them later.
  • Making a gauge swatch is critical to achieve the desired results. I used to think that I “always worked to gauge.” However, it finally dawned on me that what I was really assuming was that I worked to the same gauge as the person who designed the pattern. Believe me, that is a bad assumption. Please DO NOT assume that you crochet to the same gauge as I do! I have learned that I tend to crochet on the "tight" end of the spectrum, so do not be surprised if you need to go down a hook size (or 2!). Yes, it is an extra step, but it also assures you that what you are crocheting will produce what you expect. And you won’t need to worry about running out of yarn.
  • If you are substituting yarn, it is especially important to verify that it behaves in the same way as the yarn called for in the pattern. If you are using a substitute yarn, be sure that it is mostly natural fibers. You need to be able to block the blanket to get the straightest possible edges. Man-made fibers typically do not block well and will shrink back to the as-knit shape.

Errata- Section 2 chart updated. Please download a new copy of the pattern. *Please note, if you are watching the video, follow the written directions for rows 16 and 17.

Round 90 should be written: 90(RS): ch2, hdc around same dc of Section 9, hdc in top of next dc, hdc around same dc, hdc in top of next hdc, hdc around same hdc, hdc in first dc of Section 7, * hdc in next 129 dc, hdc in top of turning ch, hdc around first dc of next section, (hdc in top of same dc, hdc around next dc) x 9 *, 5 hdc in next dc (corner), rep from * to *, hdc in top of last dc. The start of Section 9 is to the left, which includes 6 ch with hdc. Sl st to the 2nd ch, turn. (311 hdc)

This was such a fun experience and the end product is absolutely gorgeous! The colorways came together in such a lovely way and the blanket itself is heavenly to cuddle under. As the 2022 MCAL this was a fun project. I didn’t get started until July, so I had some catching up to do but the pattern is fairly easy (and forgiving), stitches easy. I changed colors and some of the pattern design to suit my tastes, and this was not difficult to do.

I started off really liking this but have to admit the last two sections a big letdown also knowing the next two will probably be the same. Would rather have just gone around the blanket instead of all the stopping and starting. Well wait for all clues before going on. Have to get past the tedious. Sorry about the comments it is beautiful but starting to be a little of a let down.

If I may I would just say one thing :is there any way you could work out a way to get the yarn to us maybe three at a time ? it would save on shipping of course but with the new delays in the postal service the orders take more time to get to us Otherwise thank you Chandi this Mystery Knit or Crochet Along is a great idea. regards

This is my first crochet project and I am learning a lot! I just finished clue one, havings crocheted the original square at least three times over. There are mistakes where I fudged to get to the right number of stitches, but they are not really very apparent IMHO. The pattern is very straightforward once you 'get it', the forum is incredibly helpful and the yarn is wonderful.

This is my first actual crochet project and I have been having a very hard time basically because I am learning how to crochet as I go along. I have just finished clue one having actually crocheted the whole thing at least three times. BUT the pattern is straightforward and easy to understand once you 'get it'. Even though there are mistakes where I fudged a bit, they are really not immediately apparent IMHO. The jury is out because I'm not sure that I really care for crocheted items - however, I have to give this a top rating because I am learning a lot, it is turning out well, I love the yarn, the forum is full of helpful people.

Two clues completed, with 10 remaining, this is looking to be a very attractive and fun project. I appreciate all the time and effort to produce such a lovely blanket with my only criticism being that instructions could be enormously improved with complete charts rather than the abbreviated form, which for me, do not help. Thank you for hosting this mystery CAL - I am enjoying it so much!
