Milla

$6.00

SIZE: Approximately 21” height x 91” width, blocked.

MATERIALS:

Expression Fiber Arts Luster Sport

Shown in colors : Allegory (a), Old Photographs (b), and Foreshadow (c)

(a) 2 skeins, (b) 1 skein, (c) 1 skein

If those colors aren't available, any from this category will work. A total of 1100 yards were used for the sample shown.

NEEDLES:

US size 6 (4.0 mm) 40” circular or longer to accommodate the large number of sts.

US size 7 (4.5 mm) 40” or longer to work the edging.

Adventurous Beginner-  This pattern is for those who are comfortable knitting textured patterns and are ready to learn some new skills (striping colors, slipping sts and adding an edging).

Notes From the Designer:

You’ll feel like royalty every time you wear this large, semi-circular shawl that looks more complicated to knit than it actually is! A simple slip stitch pattern worked in two colors on larger needles gives a feeling of depth to this piece, and a Japanese lace edging adds a fun but elegant flourish to the hem.

•Shawl begins with a garter tab CO and is shaped by increasing only at the edges, so there is no center spine to interrupt the flow of the texture pattern.

•When working the body in 2 colors, color A will be the dominant color, while color B will add depth from the background. If you prefer to work the body in one color, you certainly can: the focus will be more on texture than color and will create a subtle accessory that can be worn anywhere.

•After completion of the body, a small number of sts are CO to work the sideways edging. I recommend working the edging on a needle one size larger than you used for the body, to allow the edging to stretch and drape properly. The edging can be worked in a third color, as shown, in one of the two body colors, or the entire shawl can be worked in one color. As always, there is room in the color selection to make a piece that is truly yours.

•When I named this piece, I had been replaying one of my favorite video games, Tales of Xillia. I don’t often have time to play, but sometimes I like to go back to a game with a good storyline. This piece is named after one of the main characters, Milla Maxwell. Milla loses nearly everything she knows throughout the game, but chooses to build something new for those around her, and in the end becomes a new Milla. At the time, the name just sounded good, but perhaps it’s also an unwitting metaphor for us all?

Love this pattern so much that I made 2 in different types of yarn. They look gorgeous wrapped around your neck. Thank you EFA!

This is a stunning pattern. I made it with bamboo yarn (which was more difficult than I expected), and it looks intricate with an amazing drape. I cannot wait to make it again with easier yarn--as suggested in the pattern. The only thing is that to get any length down your back, you need to make it very long on the sides. I wish there were instructions to make it wider and shorter on the sides. Is that possible?

The buttons are cute, but there are no care instructions or info on the material, therefore I can’t give them a higher rating.

These buttons are cute, but I wish care instructions and info regarding the material they were made of had been included. This is why I didn’t give them a higher rating.

This shawl is gorgeous! It has both a simplicity ( the swaths of knitting) and a complexity (in the lace edging) that I find interesting.
