Notes from the Designer:

The style of this cape is known as a ruana, which is native to the Colombian Andes, and is associated with the Muisca, indigenous people of that area. This terrific texture is supremely simple to create: alternate working half-double crochet stitches into front and back loops. That's it. After the set-up rows, there’s just one pattern row to remember. Change colors at the end of rows as indicated using a six-color kit designed to fade effortlessly from light gray to roses that flatter all skin tones. This seamless ruana is one size fits most, although length and shoulder drape may alter in appearance based on individual frames.

  • Click the Videos tab to follow along with me, as I make a mini version showing you all the stitches and construction.
  • The pattern is worked from the bottom up to the shoulders and then reverses colors down the back.
  • This pattern doesn’t have a right or wrong side.
  • The stitch count remains constant in each section. Consider using a locking stitch marker in each turning chain to denote where the final hdc of the next row should be worked.
  • If you prefer a closed ruana, simply seam together the sides, starting from the bottom edge and leaving ample room for armholes; for a poncho, seam together the front panels, starting from the bottom edge and leaving room for neckline.
  • If you wish to adjust the width of this pattern, change your foundation row by multiples of 2. Increasing width without decreasing length may require additional yarn.
  • Wet blocking is crucial to achieving final dimensions with this stitch pattern and yarn base. Expect the piece to seem too small while working. For more information about wet blocking, click here.
