NEEDLES:

US size 6 (4 mm) 32-60” circular knitting needle, or size needed to obtain gauge

SKILL LEVEL:

Intermediate - This pattern is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include Garter Tab cast on, beading using a crochet hook, dropping yarn overs, knitting into the front and back of the same stitch, and making bobbles by purling more than two stitches together.

Notes from the Designer:

Many years ago, I spent a magical birthday in the coastal fishing village of Cadaqués, Spain. Small boats and buoys bobbed in the water, as the last rays of the waning sun danced upon the gentle waves. Dusky blues and grays merged where sea, sky, and clouds met. This is the inspiration for Plongée — a French word that connotes immersion, a plunge or a dive into the sea.

Plongée features repeating sections of beaded Stockinette stitch, dropped yarn overs, and bobbles that increase in size as you progress. You’ll begin with a Garter Tab cast on, and increase the shawl’s size by adding two stitches at both the beginning and end of each right-side row, as well as one stitch on each side of the center axis. You’ll complete five iterations of a four-part sequence, and then knit a portion of the full sequence before binding off.

Click the Videos tab to watch a video tutorial on how to make the bobbles and drop the yarn overs.

  • This shawl is knitted flat in one piece and is composed of repeating sections of beaded Stockinette stitch, dropped yarn overs, and bobbles that increase in size as you progress through the pattern. You’ll complete five iterations of a four-part stitch sequence, and then knit a portion of the full sequence before binding off.
  • Plongée begins with a Garter Tab cast on. After you’ve completed the cast-on rows, each RS row begins and ends with a M3, which increases your stitch count by four stitches. Additionally, you’ll also use yarn overs to add one stitch on each side of the triangle’s center axis. At the completion of every RS row, you’ll have increased your stitch count by six stitches.
  • Throughout the shawl, you’ll work with two colors of yarn at the same time. You can carry your nonworking yarn up the side or back until you’re instructed to break the yarn.
  • I highly recommend checking your gauge against mine to ensure that you have enough yarn to complete the design.
  • When you purl the rows immediately before the rows in which you make bobbles, you may wish to intentionally loosen up your knitting, so it’s easier to knit the bobbles, especially as the bobbles get larger. You can do this either by relaxing your tension or using a needle that is one size larger on these rows.
  • When you knit the bobbles, avoid pulling the p#tog's too tightly, as it reduces some of the girth and makes the bobbles seem less rounded and smaller.
  • Throughout the design, there are several areas that include beading. While this design can be knitted without beads, I encourage you to add them for greater effect.
