Notes from the Designer:

One of my most memorable family vacations was a trip we took to the Pacific Northwest in the summer. The weather was picture perfect, and we were able to experience so much of the beauty provided by Mother Nature. A daylong hike around Mt. Rainier was the inspiration for this shawl. The crystal blue sky, peaks of the Cascades, icy blues of the glacier, and greens of the meadows dotted with little wildflowers are all represented in this design.

Construction of the shawl begins in the center and is worked in rounds to form a square. Two sides of the square are then worked flat, changing colors and stitch patterns until the scalloped edge is completed. Returning to the remaining two sides, the patterns are repeated to reach the other end of the shawl. Garter stitch with simple lace patterns keep the knitting interesting without becoming overwhelming for an intermediate knitter.

  • Click the Videos tab to watch a video tutorial on how to work the Magic Circle Cast On.
  • Making a gauge swatch is critical to achieve the desired results. Please DO NOT assume that you knit to the same gauge as I do! Yes, it is an extra step, but it also assures you that what you are knitting will produce what you expect. Also, you won’t need to worry about running out of yarn. If you are substituting yarn, it is especially important to verify that it behaves in the same way as the yarn called for in the pattern.
  • To customize the length of the shawl, add or subtract rows in the Garter sections.
  • Using the Devoted Hues kit, work from the lightest to darkest shades. Alternatively, the colors could be worked in reverse.
