Notes From the Designer:

To honor the Fijian side of my family, I chose to name this beautiful pattern Tubucake (Too-boo-thah-k), which is the Fijian word for ‘growth.’ We all have times in our life when we have a choice to grow or stay put. This beautiful design was my growth, and it’s one you can make your own just by the way the hexagons and colors are placed. This crochet motif design, which uses a double crochet in the round, starts with one hexagon at a time. You will find that this design is a joy to make, as one color grows into the next and is enveloped with a beautiful lace border with delicate beading.

  • Click the Videos tab to watch a video on how to make the hexagons and how to complete the seaming.
  • This pattern is made with a total of 109 hexagons and half hexagons.
  • Total of 97 hexagons: Color A) 22, B) 20, C) 19, D) 20, and E) 16.
  • Total of 12 half hexagons: Color A) 2, B) 2, C) 4, D) 2, and E) 2.
  • Border is worked in Color F.
  • In this pattern, I am introducing a new way to make the basic hexagon. This is most likely different than the one most people know. If you choose, you can use your preferred method of making the hexagons.
  • For best results, block your hexagons before sewing them together. Each side of the hexagon is blocked to 2.5”.
  • Gauge is important, as it will change the size of your hexagons, thus changing the size of your project. I tend to crochet on the looser side, so you may need to adjust the size of your hook to give you the gauge shown.

I love the turotial. I'm still working on it, joining the hexagons is the most difficult thing of the work. I used Schachenmayr yarn, Alva silk. The colors aren't as bright as yours, that's a pitty. I love all your tutorials and yarns although, for me, your yarns are too expensive.

Unfortunately clue 3 of the mcal did not work for me. So what to do?waiting for clue 4 and in the meantime working on my first hexagon blanket ever. And what a joy it is to make! AND very Easy to take with you on the road since you make one hexagon at the time.

I haven't actually started this pattern yet. I have too many other WIP's going, but I am really excited to make this. I am thinking I will make it into a blanket rather than a wrap. It will be a great way to use up a bunch of the yarns I have left over from making Gdansk and Retrovibe.

I love this hexagon design! A little different than others I've tried and I prefer it. It's easy to follow and looks very balanced with no obvious "seam" at the join. The pattern lets the yarn shine with its understated elegance. Really love it!
