Notes From the Designer:

This shawl design brings back memories of an evening, summer storm at the beach. The way the broody sky shifts its colors among deep blues, greens, and grays, and the sight of choppy waves that kick up in the ocean, as the wind and rains begin. There is something oddly comforting in those short, summer storms. A welcome break from the intense sun and heat of the day and a reminder of the powerful beauty of nature.

The body of this boomerang shaped shawl is knit in Garter stitch, while the border design is composed of blocks of Garter stitch and an easy, yarn over lace pattern. By simply shifting the direction of the companion decreases, the direction of the blocks changes, which make them appear to tilt left or right. The easy stitches and repetitive nature of the design make this shawl suitable for an adventurous beginner who is ready to expand their skills.

  • Making a gauge swatch is critical to achieving the desired results. Please DO NOT assume that you knit to the same gauge as I do! Yes, it is an extra step, but it also ensures that what you are knitting will produce what you expect. And you won’t need to worry about running out of yarn. If you are substituting yarn, it is especially important to verify that it behaves in the same way as the yarn called for in the pattern.
  • The three colors used in the sample were worked from lightest to darkest.
