Notes From the Designer:

One of the most powerful lessons we can learn in life is to fully love ourselves. This is not a selfish act, for when we are our best, most radiant, whole selves, we come to the world with a joyful heart and a helping hand. If we’re drowning, it’s much more challenging to help others. True self-love helps us to fully love others. If we can embrace our own selves with all of our flaws and shortcomings, it’s much easier to offer grace to others with theirs. As you crochet this cowl, which was originally named “Self-Love,” know that you are held, loved, and guided, and that one of the best gifts you can give others is your wholeness.

  • Sample shown used 1040 yds (951 m) total: Color A 340 yds (311 m), Color B 360 yds (330 m), Color C 340 yds (311 m).

  • This cowl is worked seamlessly in the round, but to keep the rounds of shells from drifting to one side, the construction is a little different. At the end of each round, the stitches are joined to the start of the round, in such a way that the joins are worked into the overall shell pattern, rather than showing a separate seam. At the end of each round, the work is turned just like you would turn a shawl or other crochet piece that is worked flat. In this way, you’ll work every other round from the Wrong Side, which will eventually become the inside of the cowl, working the newest stitches back over the just completed end of the previous round. It sounds complicated, but once you see it in action, you’ll recognize it’s no big deal. And the end result looks like magic!

  • If you want to change the width of the cowl, the stitch count can be changed by multiples of 6. 6 Fsc = 1 Shell. If you increase the width, be aware that you might need more yarn, or you can skip rounds as needed from the solid color sections.

"You are not your body, not your appearance. Those are only your packaging. When the physical parts of you wear out, you live on, unencumbered by the weight of flesh and beauty. You are free to soar because you were never those things. You are something more, something eternal.” - Toni Sorenson
