SKILL LEVEL:

Adventurous Beginner to Intermediate (depending on embellishments): This pattern is for knitters who have made a few projects and are ready to knit with more than one color of yarn and/or add embellishments. Skills/concepts include basic knit and purl stitches, knitting and purling with beads (optional), and adding a crochet chain embellishment (optional).

Notes From the Designer:

Scrumptiously soft yarn with a fluffy cotton-candy halo, delicately quiet stitch textures, and a subtle beaded shine. These sweet details come together in the Zucchero shawl. ‘Zucchero’ is the Italian word for ‘sugar,’ and it’s the perfect description for this delectable shawl that’s designed to wrap you in a yummy, snuggly hug. This shawl is knitted flat in one piece and includes repeating sections of Beaded Stockinette Stitch and Beaded Diamond Stitch, along with a Garter Stitch border on all four sides. Instructions are also included to add beads and a crochet chain embellishment. While both are optional, they are more than just adornment, but rather a key aspect of the overall design, and when added to your shawl, they will elevate a simple stitch pattern to new heights.

  • Click the Videos tab to watch a video on how to apply the crochet chain embellishment.
  • This shawl is knitted flat in one piece and includes repeating sections of Beaded Stockinette Stitch and Beaded Diamond Stitch, along with a Garter Stitch border on all four sides.
  • 477 to 514 yds (436 to 470 m) of each color were used in the unembellished sample, approx. total 1,443 yds/1,320 m; [C1: 477 yds/436 m, C2: 514 yds/470 m, and C3: 452 yds/413 m]. 477 to 583 yds (436 to 533 m) of each color were used in the embellished sample, approx. total 1,566 yds/1,432 m; [C1: 477 yds/436 m, C2: 583 yds/533 m, and C3: 506 yds/463 m].
  • Because I am a tight knitter, I highly recommend checking your gauge against mine. If you are a loose knitter, taking the time to match the indicated gauge and dropping down a needle size or two, if needed, will help to ensure that the subtle stitches in this pattern stand out.
  • If you would like to modify the overall length of this shawl, you can knit more or fewer repeats of the stitch patterns in any of the sections; however, be sure to make these modifications on both halves of the shawl in order to maintain its symmetry. If you would like to modify the width, you can increase or decrease the number of stitches you cast on in multiples of 8 + 11 stitches.
  • While this design can be knitted without beads, I encourage you to add them for greater effect. I used two different colors of beads, but you can use as many or as few colors as you like. The sample shown here used the Transparent Matte Blue Lilac beads with C1 and C3 and the Opaque Ceylon Pastel Lilac beads with C2. It’s important to use the crochet hook method that’s described above to apply the beads, rather than pre-stringing them. This will ensure the beads sit correctly on both the RS and WS rows. Additionally, both the beading and the crochet chain embellishment that’s described in the Finishing Section are optional; however, both are a key element of the shawl design.
