SKILL LEVEL:

Advanced: Perfect for the experienced knitter who is familiar with lace knitting using yo, k2tog, and ssk. Careful attention to stitch count is important, and use of stitch markers is recommended, especially during the Glacier Stripes.

Notes from the Designer:

Inspired by my honeymoon trip to Alaska about two years ago, this shawl recalls the divine purple lupine flowers, the sweeping green spruce and pine trees, the unforgettable blue glaciers, and the deep bottomless blue of the ocean. These beautiful features found in the vast, open wilderness of Alaska were the most memorable to me, and I wanted to create something that would forever commemorate this amazing adventure.

Delicate, floral lace combines with the textural lines of faux cable to create this beautiful accessory. With the delicacy of the linen fibers, slightly shiny glow of silk, and added warmth of alpaca, this lightweight shawl with its generous size will wrap you in luxury.

  • Click the Videos tab to watch a video showing how to work the special stitches found in this pattern.
  • Shawl is worked as a right triangle, starting at one tip and increasing on one side only of every other RS row.
  • After the Beginning Wedge is complete, sequence continues as follows: Glacier Stripe (Color B), Insert (Color A), Spruce Forest Stripe (Color C), Insert (Color A), Lupine Stripe (Color D), Insert (Color A), Spruce Forest Stripe (Color C), Insert (Color A).
  • Repeat stripe sequence following written instructions until shawl is desired length.
  • Both Glacier Stripe and Lupine Stripe have fewer rows at first, and then more rows as the shawl lengthens.
  • When working the LS stitch in the Spruce Forest Stripes, be sure to keep the long loops loose.
  • As with most lacework shawls, block vigorously to measurements in order to display the full beauty of the lace stitches.
