Notes From the Designer:

This knit version of the crochet Doradus pattern is named for Abbé Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille, (1713–1762), a French astronomer and geodesist who named 14 of the 88 constellations. From 1750 to 1754, he studied the sky at the Cape of Good Hope in present-day South Africa. During that time, he observed the Tarantula Nebula, also known as 30 Doradus, and catalogued it as a "Nebulae of the First Class." The star-forming region of 30 Doradus is one of the largest located close to the Milky Way. About 2,400 massive stars exist in the center of 30 Doradus.

  • Click the Videos tab to watch a tutorial on how to make the stitches needed to make this shawl.
  • Like its crocheted sister, de Lacaille features eyelets on a plain stitch background, allowing the colors and sparkle of the yarn to shine through.
  • This pattern doesn’t have a right or wrong side.
