Notes From the Designer:

•This shawl design came about by my need for something relatively uncomplicated to work on, removing my thoughts from the troubling times that our world currently faces. I am not typically enthusiastic about knitting a lot of garter stitch, but, when I am feeling stressed, I find it quite soothing. Somehow the predictable rhythm of it helps my troubles fade away, allowing my thoughts to wander and my mind to relax. Malana, a Hawaiian name that means calming or relaxing, seemed the perfect name for this shawl.

•This design is very customizable. Any weight yarn may be used, and the shawl may be made to almost any length. Several cable options are available to choose from, based on your experience and comfort level. Once all of the markers are in place, you may only need to refer back to the pattern when you are ready to knit the finishing edge. This edge is worked in a way that reduces the cables to ribbing, which then proceed perpendicular across the top of the shawl and finally fade off into a point.
